YOU BOSSÉ-GIRARD – Québec (Canadá)

« I have spent one year doing voluntary work for AsoProLA in Altamira de Biolley and my heart still beats faster and I can’t stop smiling when I think about it – as if still in love. The small cooperation of farmers may be located a couple of hours and nerves away from the capital, but that is also why the place is so special: Altamira borders on the Parque Internacional La Amistad and only has around 400 inhabitants. It is situated in the Costa Rican highlands which is why there are so many farmers producing coffee. It is known to be one of the best regions to produce coffee in the world! But besides that, you can see farmers producing all kind of tropical fruits from avocado to manioc.

AsoProLA initiated a lot of interesting projects with regional farmers in order to work more biodynamically and to become more independent as producers. I was incredibly happy to participate and work with them because that way I learned a lot about Costa Rican agriculture and people of the region and their traditions. As the association also is a coop for coffee, I worked a lot in the production of coffee and helped out during the harvest. I got to know many farmers and farms this way which was really extraordinary. Even if there aren’t that many people in and around Altamira, I met many individuals with interesting stories to tell and never-heard experiences to share, which is why I could never get bored in Altamira.

Besides the work in the countryside, I also helped out in the office and worked on the decoration of the main buildings. Moreover, I worked with other volunteers from different countries which was as well very interesting. Working with AsoProLa is highly diverse in every aspect.

During my stay, I lived with a lovely host family that welcomed me warm-hearted and shared their home with me. My hostmom cooked fresh, local and traditional food with a lot of love.

The experiences and impressions I collected during that year are still present in my everyday life. It changed my life and my view upon many things which I will always be grateful for. »
